Choose by weight
For a child, weight is the main criterion. Each life jacket covers a weight range shown on its product page. Don’t buy a jacket that is too big “so it lasts longer”: it could ride up and fail to hold the child properly.
What to check
A crotch strap stops the jacket from sliding upwards. A buoyant collar helps keep the head above water. Buckles and fastenings should be easy for an adult to operate, but not too easy for a young child. Have your child try on the jacket and pull it upwards by the shoulders: it should stay in place.
A life jacket is no substitute for supervision
Even when wearing a life jacket, a child must remain under constant adult supervision, within arm’s reach near the water. Get them used to wearing their jacket as soon as they step onto a paddle board, a kayak or a boat.
